Choosing Elevated Dog Bowls
Elevated dog bowls don't just make mealtimes more comfortable for many dogs, they're also a healthier choice.A whole host of canine health issues can be relieved, or minimized, by offering food and water from raised dishes. The benefits of elevated feeders include: - Reduces strain on bones/joints/muscles
- Helps make swallowing easier for dogs with esophagus problems such as megaesophagus
- Minimizes the discomfort of digestive issues such as acid reflux
- Reduces the amount of air swallowed when eating which helps minimize flatulence and can be a big help in reducing the risk of life-threatening Canine Bloat or 'Torsion'.
BUT, there are some studies that also indicate that using raised dog bowls may increase the risks in dogs who have a family history of bloat, or have suffered from it in the past. You'll need to know the individual dog and weigh up the pros and cons on this.
Because large and giant breeds suffer more from bone/joint problems and from bloat, elevated dog bowls are a great choice for them. But their usefulness is by no means limited to the 'big guys'. Older dogs who suffer from arthritis or stiff joints are also often more comfy with a raised dog bowl, and smaller dogs can enjoy them too. Then there are other, less direct, benefits to choosing an elevated dog bowl, such as: - Most of them aren't just practical, they're good to look at too! There are designs to complement all decors, tastes and budgets
- Elevated dog bowls can also keep your kitchen neater, and the floor cleaner. Many have raised edges or 'lips' keep food and water where it needs to be (in the bowls!), leaving your floor cleaner and drier.
- Some models have a built-in 'feed-n-store' option. The base doubles as a storage area for food, toys or other doggie paraphernalia which is handy if kitchen space is limited
